Air Quality Investigation and Research for Equity

This year-long Colorado community-based research project aimed to bring awareness, education, unity, and action around poor air quality in the Commerce City, Globeville, Elyria-Swansea communities due to toxic air pollution from Suncor.

We have multiple parts of the project where community involvement is key! If you want to make a difference in your community and be compensated for your time, sign up for the project you are interested in!

Home Base Air Monitoring

Air monitors are vital to know what is in our air! Knowing what chemicals are in the air will help us understand community health and keep polluters accountable. Our team will be putting up stationary air monitors, operating a mobile air monitor, and placing air monitors at homes around the community. Having more monitors in the community will help us understand where the most pollution is, where it is coming from and how much is present.

If you are a resident of Commerce City, Globeville, or Elyria-Swansea, you are eligible to have an air monitor at your home. If you decide to have an air monitor, you will be compensated. You will also learn about the monitors, how they work, and how to maintain them!

Student Internship

We believe it is vital to engage the youth and teach them about the impact of poor air quality. We want to make sure that our children are being educated about what is going on and help them build careers that positively impact the Earth. We are recruiting high school students to participate in this study as interns. They will be helping with the implementation and maintenance of home air monitors while also receiving education regarding environmental justice, environmental health, and environmental science.

There has not been a comprehensive health study in Commerce City about the health impacts of Suncor’s pollution. We want to interview community members about their health and any symptoms you or your family are experiencing. This will help us learn more about how air pollution is harming the community. These surveys will be done by health professionals who will keep your information safe and confidential.
